Parents put toddlers at risk at Howth pier with high waves breaking over walls

The Coast Guard has warned of the dangers of these high waves, which can take people off their feet and wash them into the water.

THE IRISH COAST Guard unit in Howth is advising people not to walk along the exposed harbour walls to watch the waves breaking at high tide in the current weather conditions.

The choppy weather today means high waves are breaking over the pier and photos snapped by the Coast Guard today have already shown families putting themselves in serious danger.

The pictures show parents, some with toddlers, risking their lives by going under waves that are breaking onto the harbour wall.

Today, Colin Murray, the officer in charge of Howth Coast Guard station said the public should realise that the force of the waves can take people off their feet and wash them into the cold waters of the harbour very quickly.

“Over the years Coast Guard and Lifeboat personnel have been tasked to recover people who have fallen into the harbour after being hit by such waves, this put unnecessary risk onto the emergency service personnel responding,” he added.

If the public do see people putting themselves in danger they are being asked to dial 999/112 immediately and ask for the Coast Guard.
