AS IT HAPPENED

As it happened: Hull City v Manchester United, Premier League

The two sides met at the KCOM Stadium with 100% records from their first two Premier League fixtures.

Good evening and welcome to our live coverage of Hull against Manchester United. The team news is in!

No changes for either side. Not surprising really considering the few options interim manager Mike Phelan has at his disposal, with David Meyler making his third successive league start for the Tigers. Jose Mourinho also sees no reason to change a winning formula, for United.

Mike Phelan will be hoping another impressive result will see him given the Hull manager’s job on a permanent basis following two wins from their opening two league games.

Phelan remember, made over 100 appearances for United as a player and spent the best part of 15 years working as a coach at the club.

The last time Hull beat United? It was 42 years ago with Hull securing a 2-0 win in England’s second tier.

Jose is all smiles ahead of this one. Will he still be smiling at full-time?

Ibrahimovic has scored 41 goals in last 31 league matches – with goals coming in 25 of them.

United kick-off the match.

Valencia with an early cross for Ibrahimovic, who tries to acrobatically bring the ball down, but it’s cleared by Hull. Positive start from the visitors.

Fellaini carelessly brings down Diomande on the edge of the United box, but the free-kick from Snodgrass is straight into the United wall.

Ibrahimovic, Martial and Rooney link up down the left flank, but the attack comes to nothing. It will be interesting to keep an eye on that side of the pitch, in particular, throughout the match.

CHANCE: Martial floats in a teasing cross and Ibrahimovic out-muscles his marker to get his head to the ball, but the header goes over the bar. United dominating the early play, with fluidity to their attacks here.

If you fancy a flutter this evening, Wayne Rooney has scored seven times in his last five appearances against Hull.

A good tempo to the game but neither goalkeeper tested yet. Hull happy to soak up the early pressure, and try and catch United on the counter.

Valencia’s cross after another darting run reaches Ibrahimovic on the edge of the box, but the Hull defenders swarm around the former PSG forward, and clear the ball.

The away side are trying to use as much width as possible in every attack, this time it was Pogba that attempts to find an attacker in the box, but you guessed it – cleared by Hull.

BOOKED: Fellaini with a clumsy tackle from behind on Diomande and is given a yellow card by referee Jonathan Moss.

CLOSE! Much better from Snodgrass who bends the ball up and around the wall, but also past De Gea’s post. The closest we’ve come to a goal so far.

CHANCE: Moments later, superb teasing cross from left-back Robertson, but Shaw gets in front of the onrushing Snodgrass with the ball rolling into De Gea’s grateful hands.

Snodgrass comes off for some treatment following his clash with Shaw, but returns to the pitch to warm applause from the home crowd.

30 mins gone and this is how the match stats look:

United stats

SHOT: Pogba has a shot in hope, rather than expectation from 30 yards, but on a slippery surface it was well worth a try. But the ball jumps perfectly into Jakupovic’s chest.

Diomande fouls Mata on the edge of the Hull box. and there is a conference between the United players as to who will take it.

SAVE! Comfortable again for Jakupovic. Mata’s left-footed shot doesn’t trick the Hull goalkeeper, who trusts his wall and stands his ground to easily gather.

SAVE: Meyler’s deflected cross reaches the head of Hernández, who tries his best to direct the ball into the corner of the United net, but with no power it is easy for De Gea.

CLEAR: Davies is on the line to block Rooney’s shot with his chest, following good skill from Mata to reach the byline.

United’s players did appeal for a penalty, but the replays show referee Moss got the decision spot on.

Fellaini was sent off on his last visit to Hull – he is on a yellow card with more than 50 minutes to go.

SAVE: Good pass from Bailly finds Valencia down the right wing, the Ecuadorian swings in a cross that reaches Mata on the edge of the box but his header lacks the power to beat Jakupovic.

Rooney teases in a cross from a free-kick that should have been gathered by Jakupovic, but Ibrahimovic managed to get in front of the Hull goalkeeper, he was left with no option other than to try and back-heel it into the net, but his attempt hits the side-netting.

HT: Hull City 0-0 Manchester United

Both sides will go into the break relatively pleased. Mourinho’s side have dominated the possession, and started to create better chances as the match progressed.

But Hull will consider themselves comfortable in the game, and may feel they can catch the visitors on the break in the second-half, as United go in search of a winner.

Here we go. The second-half has started at a wet KCOM stadium.

Not a good sight. Snodgrass, who has just returned from a long-term injury, is down again at the start of the second-half.

SUB: The injured Snodgrass is replaced by fellow Scot Shaun Maloney.

HEADER: Rooney leaps highest following a deflected Shaw cross, but no power in the header makes it easy for Jakupovic.

Mkhitaryan and Rashford warming-up for United. The away side may need to bring on some re-reinforcements here to break down this stubborn Hull defence.

He has scored in every game so far for his new club, can Zlatan maintain that record this evening?

United stringing some passes together but with both Ibrahimovic and Rooney coming deep looking for the ball, it is not resulting in any clear cut opportunities.

Another cross from Valencia is easily gathered by Jakupovic. Mkhitaryan is about to come on, but for who? We’ll find out shortly.

SUB: Martial has shot out of total frustration from distance, that fails to trouble Jakupovic. Mkhitaryan then replaces the French international, who has failed to sparkle out wide.

CLOSE! Pogba’s pass to Ibrahimovic is only half-cleared, and the Swede’s attempt on the half-volley goes narrowly wide, following a deflection. The corner comes to nothing, however.

OFFSIDE: United upping the tempo now. Pogba is now playing further forward, and a clever flick from Ibrahimovic finds Mata, but the Spaniard is in an offside position.

Hull fighting for every ball at the moment, but Pogba sees his powerful shot whiz past the post.

Hull haven’t had a single shot in this half, and will be more than happy to take a point right now. Not Mourinho though. Just over 20 minutes to go.

The new Manchester United manager is not best pleased at the moment. Where is Steve McClaren when you need him?

FOUL: A lovely dribble from Mkhitaryan following a burst of pace from the substitute, but he is stopped in his tracks by a foul from Huddlestone, who is booked. The free-kick from Ibrahimovic comes to nothing.

SUB: Mata is off and is replaced by Rashford.

A cross from Valencia hits Meyler on the shoulder, but United’s appeals for a penalty are waved away.

CLOSE! It’s Rooney this time. Valencia’s cross is half-cleared by Hull and the ball falls beautifully for the England captain, but his volley is wide.

SHOT! The other end this time and it’s Huddlestone, who has a powerful right boot, and his attempt his blocked by Bailly.

Not long left now Mike. 15 minutes to be exact.

WIDE! The resulting free-kick from Pogba goes five yards wide. Ibrahimovic is not impressed.

SAVE! Best save of the game from Jakupovic as Rashford takes on three defenders, he tries to curl the ball past the Hull goalkeeper, but he gets down smartly to save.

CLOSE! Good play from Pogba sees him square the ball across the Hull goal, and Davies very nearly indirectly hits the ball towards his own goal, but his defensive partner Livermore bails out his teammate by blocking the goal-bound clearance.

BLOCK! Good play this time from Luke Shaw down the left flank, but Mkhitaryan’s shot is blocked following Rashford’s lay-off.

Two United corners are cleared by the home side. Rooney lobs in another cross and Pogba catches Meyler with a high boot. Hull are clinging on – just.

A superb cross from Rashford, so inviting for any attacker willing to gamble inside the box, but it comes to nothing. Ibrahimovic applauds Rashford’s play, knowing he should have been on the end of it.

CLOSE AGAIN! Rashford links well with Shaw to set up Pogba, but his curling attempt goes wide – to the relief of the Hull supporters.

SAVE! Another attempt from distance by Mourinho’s side but Mkhitaryan’s shot is comfortable for Jakupovic.

Four additional minutes for Hull to hang on and United to get a winner.

OVER! Another Pogba shot goes well over the bar. You can hear Mourinho roaring from the sidelines. Moments later, Ireland international Meyler hits it over the bar.

GOAL! Hull City 0-1 Man Utd (Rashford ’90)

Rooney skips past Elmohamady and squares to ball to Rashford who is in the right place at the right time to tap the ball in. No more than United deserve, although Hull will count themselves unlucky.

FT: Hull City 0-1 Man Utd

It’s early in the season, but will we be looking back at this result in May, as one of the most important three points of the season? Three wins from three for Mourinho in the Premier League.
