IRELAND MANAGER GIOVANNI TRAPATTONI became irritated when asked to explain his decision to omit Kevin Foley in favour of Paul McShane in his final squad for the European Championships.

Speaking to reporters after training in Montecatini on Thursday, the Italian insisted he had said all he had to say on the situation.

“I have already explained to you why I chose between two players with different characteristics. I don’t wish to speak again about this situation,” he grumbled to 98FM’s Adrian Barry.

The press did, however, ask if Foley had a future with the Irish set-up, after the Wolves full-back said he had felt ‘betrayed’ by the decision to leave him out.

“I said this to him (that he would be in contention in the future). He must decide what he wishes to do.”

There was good news for the Irish squad, who leave Italy for Budapest at the weekend, with both Shay Given and John O’Shea both taking a full part in training.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper had been told to rest a minor knee injury earlier this week, while O’Shea has had a long standing issue with his ankle.
