'I want to manage Ireland again' - McCarthy

The Wolves manager explains why he would one day like to return to management with his country.

MICK MCCARTHY WAS in reflective mood yesterday, as he celebrated five years as Wolves manager.

And when talk turned to his future ambitions, the 52-year-old made no secret of his desire to manage Ireland again.

“If we start doing my wish list then the reality is I want to win the Premier League,” he said, before adding:

“But I also want to go to another World Cup or a European Championships with another international team or with Ireland.”

McCarthy had a relatively successful period in charge of the Irish team from 1996-2002, taking them to the last 16 of the 2002 World Cup and losing only 20 of his 68 games in charge.

The manager, who rates the 2002 World Cup side as one of the best teams he has ever managed, also revealed that he only considered leaving the Ireland job once during his time in charge at Wolves – when South Korea made an approach for him. He admitted:

“I thought about it and I’d have enjoyed it — trying to take another team to a World Cup does appeal.”

However, the ex-Millwall man is for now focused on his job with Wolves, as he aims to keep his side in the Premier League for the third season running.

Would Mick McCarthy be a good choice as next Ireland manager?
