ICELAND HAS ISSUED a new red alert after another eruption near the Bardarbunga volcano.

The fissure eruption is in Holuhraun, north of Vatnajokull.

The Icelandic Met Office said on its Facebook page:

The eruptive fissure… is longer than in the last eruption and more quiet.

Earlier this week, airspace was closed up to 5,000 feet in the area of an eruption close to the volcano.

After a number of hours, the airspace was reopened.

The National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police, Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management tweeted this morning:

The Bardarbunga volcano system was hit by a 5.7 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday. It was the most powerful eruption in 18 years.

This led to fears of an eruption that might disrupt air traffic over Iceland.
