Ireland shocked by Pakistan at Snooker World Cup

Ken Doherty and Fergal O’Brien were beaten 3-2 overall by Muhammad Sajjad and Sahid Aftab.

AFTER IRELAND’S SURPRISE victory against Pakistan at the Cricket World Cup in 2007, it appears the tables have turned.

Pakistan have given Ireland a taste of their own medicine by recording an against-the-odds win against Ken Doherty and co on the opening day of the Snooker World Cup.

Doherty, along with his partner, Fergal O’Brien, were beaten 3-2 overall by Muhammad Sajjad and Sahid Aftab.

The former world champion expressed shock at the outcome, particularly as he noted that both himself and O’Brien had made century breaks during the contest.

He partially blamed the doubles format of the tournament, which he claims makes it “very hard to get into rhythm”.

He added: “It’s a disappointing start but every frame counts so that’s a good thing so if we beat Germany or Egypt 4-1 or 5-0 then we’re right back in it.”

Ireland must now beat Egypt on Wednesday to have any hope of advancing to the next round.
