JAMES MCCLEAN PUT the Republic of Ireland ahead in their must-win World Cup qualifier against Wales in Cardiff.
It was shortly before the hour mark when the winger thumped home from inside the area after Jeff Hendrick did superbly on the right side to win back possession before racing away and whipping in an excellent cross.
Though the home side had the majority of the ball, they created little. The Irish stood firm, dug in and grafted for the remainder of the second-half to seal a play-off place with the 1-0 victory.
