IRELAND WOMEN GOT their World Cup campaign off to a strong start in Marcoussis, France yesterday with a hard-fought 23-17 victory over a physically powerful US side.

Tries from Ailis Egan and Niamh Briggs, as well as 13 points from the boot of the Munster fullback, did the damage for Philip Doyle’s side, who will now target improvement ahead of their clash with reigning world champions New Zealand on Tuesday [KO 17.00].

The Black Ferns recorded a 79-5 win over Kazakhstan in their own Pool B opener, running in no less that 13 tries in the process.
