Irish eye: Seamus Coleman makes his case for the defence in the Premier League action

Michael Maher wraps up another weekend for the Irish in the Premier League as Seamus Coleman gets a gallop on Ashley Cole

IT WAS A very quiet weekend for the Premiership’s Irish contingent, with the big news story of the weekend being Robbie Keane, despite him not
making the match day squad.

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp has given his OK for Keane to look for a new club, and there are rumours that Aston Villa, Celtic and even the Vancouver Whitecaps are interested.

Seamus Coleman – Everton

The little Killybegs man has been getting many Irish fans excited in recent months, particularly with his attacking displays.

However on Saturday he showed that he has also worked hard on the defensive aspect of his game. Coleman was well able to manage the attacking
threat of Ashley Cole all game and never once put a foot wrong. He is becoming such an important player for Everton.

Stephen Carr – Birmingham

He really seems to be rewinding the clock and showing great form this season. Birmingham have the makings of an impressive defence now, with both Johnson and Dann looking like excellent prospects beside Carr.

Keith Fahey also played but was quite average and was taken off after an hour.

Rory Delap  -  Stoke

Another assured and dependable display from Delap who, like Carr, is having quite an impressive Indian summer in his career.

He can count himself unlucky that Wigan’s second goal rebounded off him into the net. Fellow Irishman Jon Walters played 70 minutes, being replaced by Glenn Whelan.

  • In some extremely positive news for Irish fans, Sunderland David Meyler was included in Sunderland’s initial squad for their fixture with West Ham. He did not make the match-day squad but it still fantastic to see his recovery from injury going so well.
  • Elsewhere it was a very bad weekend for the Irish contingent of Kevin Doyle, Stephen Ward, Kevin Foley and Stephen Hunt at Wolves. Wolves were completely outplayed and were second best throughout in their 3-0 defeat away to Blackburn Rovers.
  • Chris Hughton also had a day to forget as his Newcastle side were well beaten at West Brom. Hughton kept his Newcastle squad in the dressingroom for 90 minutes after the match. This was all to prove in vain however as breaking news today tells us that Hughton has been fired as Newcastle manager.
