Irish hockey team win gold in San Diego, set to compete for Olympic berth

Goals from Mitch Darling and player-of-the-tournament Shane O’Donoghue inspired a 2-1 victory

Updated at 16.21

THE IRISH HOCKEY team are inching closer to the 2016 Rio Olympics, as a win over Austria ensured a sixth successive victory and maintained their progress ahead of the first leg of Olympic qualification.

Goals from Mitch Darling and Shane O’Donoghue inspired a 2-1 victory over the Austrians in the final of the 2015 Hockey World League round two, and secured a 100% record at the tournament in San Diego, with the team scoring 29 times and conceding only five goals overall.

However, the pressure was off for the Austria game to an extent after the semi-final win over Canada confirmed their qualification for the next phase of the competition — World League round three – which takes place this June in Argentina.

10 teams in total will travel to Buenos Aires, with six Olympic qualification slots potentially available.
