Irish Pride: Robbie revels in an unforgettable evening

“This is why we play football, for situations like this,” beamed Robbie Keane last night.

IN THE CLUB v country debate, there was only ever going to be one winner for Robbie Keane.

The Irish captain wouldn’t have missed last night for the world.

Having refused the LA Galaxy’s request to return to America early and rest up ahead of the side’s MLS Cup final, a proud Keane led his team-mates in a lap of honour around the Aviva Stadium, celebrating Ireland’s 5-1 aggregate win over Estonia and qualification for Euro 2012.

“Look at the crowd here – I think that says it all,” Keane told Sky Sports when asked just how much the evening meant to him.

It’s a great night for everyone – the fans, the players – it’s a night that we’ll never forget.

There have been many moments to savour in Keane’s 114 appearances in Ireland’s green, but this one will take some beating.

Full credit to everyone who’s involved in the squad. This is why we play football, for situations like this.
