SOME 69% OF you reckon it was the wrong call, but Bernard Brogan insists the referee was right to award a free-kick in the dying moments on Sunday’s Dublin-Kildare game.
The Lilywhites had battled back in the second half of their Leinster SFC semi-final at Croke Park, enjoying a numerical advantage thanks to Eoghan O’Gara’s dismissal, to get level in the final moments.
Then Andriú Mac Lochlainn was adjudged to have stopped the Footballer of the Year from getting out to the ball.
The debate has raged on since – but last night Brogan tweeted a response to Mayo forward Conor Mortimer:
“@Conmort your right, I was impeded running for the ball in a one-on-one, that’s a free in my book, end of. Don’t start @Woolberto”
As Fintan O’Toole explains in this morning’s Irish Examiner, “At the end of his tweet Brogan was referring to former Laois player Colm Parkinson who questioned the validity of the free but he did receive support from Mortimer. ‘I’d say it wasn’t the first time in the game either boss good winner #composure’.”
On Sunday night, Ex-Meath footballer Colm O’Rourke accused referees of interfering too much in matches, saying their actions were “destroying the game”.
Yesterday, however, the GAA’s national referees committee chairman Michael Curley hit back at RTÉ pundits and said Cormac Reilly’s call was a good one.
