McGrath hit with three-week suspension for stamping against Ulster

The Leinster prop has the right of appeal after the Pro12 disciplinary committee made their decision.

LEINSTER PROP JACK McGrath has been suspended for three weeks for a stamping offence in last weekend’s Guinness Pro12 clash against Ulster.

That time frame rules the loosehead out of Leinster’s crucial Champions Cup clashes with Castres and Wasps this month, as well as Saturday’s league meeting with the Cardiff Blues.

However, the Pro12 disciplinary committee reminded McGrath of his right of appeal in handing down their verdict today, which the Ireland international and Leinster may well take up as they look to have the front row available ahead of a crucial period of the season.

The disciplinary committee, chaired by Welshman Roger Morris and also including Rhian Williams [Wales] and John Doubleday [England] stated that “having reviewed video footage of the incident and having listened to representations from, and on behalf of, the player, found that the player had committed an act of foul play and upheld the citing complaint.”

McGrath’s stamping on Ulster hooker Rory Best was found to have been a deliberate act and therefore fell under the mid-range of World Rugby’s sanctions, carrying a five-week suspension.

The player’s unblemished playing record and conduct at today’s hearing meant the Pro12 committee decided to reduce that punishment by two weeks, meaning McGrath is suspended up to and including 25 January.
