JAY CUTLER APPEARS to have ended his NFL career after agreeing to join Fox Sports as an analyst.
The former Chicago Bears and Denver Broncos quarterback follows in the footsteps of Tony Romo, the ex Dallas Cowboys star having recently replaced Phil Simms as lead analyst at CBS.
Cutler was released by the Bears this offseason, and apparently did not get much interest from teams.
Multiple reports claimed the quarterback was considering retirement unless he received an offer from a team presenting him with an ideal scenario. He says he’s not completely done on the field though.
“I don’t know if retirement is the right word; I don’t feel that anyone ever really retires from the NFL,” Cutler said in a statement released by Fox Sports.
“You are either forced to leave, or you lose the desire to do what’s required to keep going. I’m in between those situations at this point in my life.”
He will now move to the broadcast booth despite not having any previous experience as an announcer and will work alongside Kevin Burkhardt and Charles Davis.
Fox Sports’ Peter Schrager confirmed the news, posting on Twitter: “It’s official. Jay Cutler has been hired by @NFLonFOX . Will join Kevin Burkhardt and Charles Davis in the booth this season.”
Cutler leaves the football field after playing 11 seasons, three in Denver and eight in Chicago.
In his playing career, Cutler threw for 32,467 yards with 208 touchdowns and 146 interceptions. He led the Bears to the NFC Championship game in 2010, but they were defeated by the Green Bay Packers.
