Joe Canning suffers injury set-back during Fitzgibbon Cup clash

“I know the manager, Anthony Cunningham has spoken to Joe himself and we’ll know more tomorrow.”

GALWAY AND LIMERICK IT are tonight waiting on news of star man, Joe Canning’s fitness.

The Portumna forward was hurt during a stellar performance in the Fitzgibbon Cup quarter-final in Limerick this afternoon.

His tally of 1-8 helped propel his college to a comfortable 1-20 to 0-08 defeat of GMIT before he was taken to hospital with a shoulder injury.

“There’s no more information at the moment,” Galway County Board chairman told TheScore tonight. “I know the manager Anthony Cunningham has spoken to Joe himself and we’ll know more tomorrow.”

Canning has in fact dislocated his shoulder and will be out of action for a month, according to RTÉ.

The player spoke of his hope for an injury-free 2012 this week after he endured a year in which he only played a handful of competitive games for Galway last season.

Galway face Dublin at Pearse Stadium on Sunday on the first weekend of National Hurling League action. UCC play UCD at the Mardyke while Carlow IT host UL in today’s last-eight Fitzgibbon Cup ties, meanwhile.
