John Terry to learn if he faces criminal charge in 'racism' row today

England skipper denies racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand during a defeat at Loftus Road in October.

BRITISH PROSECUTORS ARE expected to today announce whether England captain John Terry will be charged over alleged racist abuse of Anton Ferdinand.

The Chelsea centre-half strongly denies racially abusing the QPR defender during a defeat at Loftus Road in October. He is alleged to have called Ferdinand a ‘black ****’.

Terry had previously admitted to using a racial expletive, but claims it was said only in the context of his dismissal of racist allegations against him.

A police probe began when allegations against Terry were made by a member of the public.

Hours after video of the alleged incident first began circulating online, Terry issued a statement saying: “I’ve seen that there’s a lot of comments on the internet with regards to some video footage of me during the game.

“I’m disappointed that people have leapt to the wrong conclusions about the context of what I was seen to be saying to Anton Ferdinand.

“I would never say such a thing, and I’m saddened that people would think so.”

Last week The Sun reported that prosecutors had asked police for more information regarding the incident as new evidence had emerged.

Terry also faces the prospect of potentially losing the England captaincy for the second time if he is found guilty, after he was initially reprimanded for his alleged affair with the ex-girlfriend of his then-England teammate, Wayne Bridge.

Separately, Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was last night banned for eight games and fined £40,000 for racially abusing Patrice Evra.
