Former Dublin footballer Johnny Magee is the new Wicklow manager

Meanwhile hurling boss Casey O’Brien returns for another term in charge of the Garden County’s hurlers.

KILMACUD CROKES MAN Johnny Magee has made his first foray into inter-county management, taking over from Harry Murphy as the Wicklow senior football manager.

36-year-old Magee was a member of Murphy’s backroom team this year and makes the step up after the Rathnew man resigned in August.

Magee, the older brother of former Dublin midfielder Darren, won two Leinster titles with the Dubs and enjoyed a glittering club career with Crokes. The ex-defender won four Dublin championships, three Leinster titles and an All-Ireland title with his club during the last decade.

Elsewhere hurling boss Casey O’Brien has been ratified for another term in charge of Wicklow. He has been in charge of the Garden County since 2009 and led them to two Christy Ring finals during that time.

O’Brien was boosted earlier this week with the announcement that former football captain Leighton Glynn committed to the hurlers for the coming season.
