Jorginho breaks two Premier League records in West Ham-Chelsea clash

The Italy international midfielder attempted more passes and had more touches than anyone else since Opta began taking note of these stats.

JORGINHO ENCAPSULATES THE Sarri-ball revolution at Chelsea, with the Blues midfielder hitting a new Premier League high with his passing game against West Ham.

The new man in charge at Stamford Bridge is looking for his team to dominate opponents and wear them down with clever movement and slick interplay.

That philosophy was on display once more during a derby date with the Hammers on Sunday.

Jorginho is very much Chelsea’s playmaker-in-chief, with the Italy international charged with the task of setting the tempo.

He had the midfield engine room ticking over at the London Stadium, with 180 attempted passes across 90 minutes.

That return has seen him raise the Premier League bar, with no player having been more involved in a top-flight contest since Opta records began in 2003-04.

Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan had posted the previous Premier League best when it comes to passes, having attempted 174 against Chelsea back in March.

Jorginho has now passed that mark, while also hitting a new high in terms of touches.

He had 191 against the Hammers, with that heavy involvement seeing the star move clear of the previous best of 186 recorded by himself and City star Fernandinho.

While Jorginho was able to see plenty of the ball against West Ham, he was unable to provide a telling contribution.

Chelsea, who had opened the 2018-19 campaign with five successive victories across all competitions, were held to a 0-0 draw by their London rivals.
