Jose Mourinho admits that EFL Cup final should have gone to extra-time

The Saints didn’t deserve to lose after 90 minutes, according to the Old Trafford boss.

JOSE MOURINHO HAS admitted that the EFL Cup final should have gone to extra-time after his side scored a one goal victory over Southampton in controversial circumstances.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic inspired United to victory with a brace of goals, but Southampton had a goal disallowed in the first half that could have seen the tie end in a draw after normal time.

Southamptons’s Manolo Gabbiadini hit two goals either side of half-time, which left the scoreline reading 2-2 for much of the second half until Ibrahimovic settled the tie with a header in the 87th minute.

He could have finished the game with a hat-trick, but the flag was raised after one of his first half efforts ended up in the net from close range.

Video replays would suggest he was onside when he tapped the ball in.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Jose Mourinho praised Ibrahimovic for his performance which saw the 35-year-old score his 26th goal in all competitions this season, but admitted that Southampton were unlucky in the end.

“Zlatan won the game for us, he was outstanding.

“There were a couple of performances like Pogba who was at a similar level but Zlatan was outstanding in a match where our opponent was better than us for large periods of the game.

“Southampton deserved to go to extra-time, they didn’t deserve to lose in 90 minutes, but he (Ibrahimovic) made the difference and won us the cup.”
