Saracens sign world-class Argentina prop as Top 14 won't let him play

Juan Figallo will leave Montpellier next season as his neck injury means he cannot play in France.

MONTPELLIER HAVE CONFIRMED that tighthead prop Juan Figallo will join Saracens next season, as a neck injury means he is unable to play in competitions run by the Ligue Nationale de Rugby.

The Argentina prop suffered the injury in February, one which has since been classed as a ‘G3′ problem and therefore means that Figallo cannot play in the Top 14 or Pro D2. Attempts to have the injury re-classified as a ‘G2′ issue have been unsuccessful.

As such, the 26-year-old prop asked Montpellier to release him from the final two years of his contract and secured a deal with Saracens. With Matt Stevens leaving the Premiership club for the Sharks in Super Rugby this summer, Figallo will compete with James Johnston for a starting place in Mark McCall’s team.

Premiership rules on neck injuries are less strict than those in France, meaning that Figallo will have the chance to continue playing professionally if he recovers fully.

Montpellier coach Fabien Galthié recently confirmed that Antoine Battut, Ben Mowen, Benjamin Fall, David Attoub, Samisoni Viriviri, Akapusi Qera and Teddy Iribaren will join the club ahead of next season.
