Olympic Breakfast: The moment we've all been waiting for

It’s a crucial day for Ireland, with both Annalise Murphy and Katie Taylor close to securing a medal.

EVERY MORNING, WE bring you all of the info you need to make sure you don’t miss a second of Olympic gold.

Anticipation is high for Day Ten from an Irish perspective.

Buoyed by John Joe Nevin’s win last night, supporters from these shores will no doubt be keeping a close eye on Annalise Murphy and Katie Taylor, both of whom will have high hopes of emulating Nevin’s achievement of securing a bronze medal at the very least.

And away from Irish interests, the USA’s basketball match with Argentina looks like it could be an intriguing affair, plus there’s plenty more athletics action following last night’s spectacular scenes.

Top of the bill

Boxing

There is one event event in particular on every Irish person’s lips today and that, of course, is Katie Taylor’s long-awaited quarter-final bout, which is due to start at 2.30pm. She only discovered the identity of her opponent yesterday, after Natasha Jonas beat Queen Underwood 21-13. And with John Joe Nevin’s heroics yesterday, the pressure has now been taken off Taylor to an extent.

Sailing

Meanwhile, similarly eagerly anticipated is Annalise Murphy’s Laser Radial medal race in the sailing, as she attempts to continue her astonishing form thus far, and secure Ireland’s first gold medal at these Games.

Athletics

While the 100m may have been settled, there is still plenty of athletics action left, with the Men’s 400m Final and the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase Final among the big events taking place tonight.

Who’s flying the flag?

Shooting

Derek Burnett will be hoping he can improve on finishing 24th yesterday, and he’s due to begin Round 1 of the Men’s Trap Qualification at 9am.

Athletics

The 100m hurdles heats get underway at 10.05am, and there is Irish interest in the form of Derval O’Rourke, who will compete in Heat 4, which is due to begin at approximately 10.26am.

Sailing
Annalise Murphy’s big event starts at 1pm, while Ger Owens and Scott Flanigan begin at 12.00pm in the Men’s 470.

Finally, Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern compete from 3pm onwards in the Men’s 49er.

Boxing

Make sure you’re near a TV at approximately 2.30pm, as Katie Taylor’s fight is set to commence around then.

Equestrian

Cian O’Connor will be in action at 2pm in the Individual Jumping, following his progression yesterday.

Do not miss…

Aside from the obvious two events involving a certain K Taylor and A Murphy, there is also a big game in Women’s Football, with USA taking on Canada in the semi-finals at 7.45pm.

The Men’s 400m Final at 9.30pm should also prove fascinating, though it has a lot to live up to, after the high drama of the 100m last night.

Finally, the USA face a tricky encounter in Men’s Basketball against Argentina. You can watch LeBron and co from 10.15pm onwards.
