Allstar hurling game to be held in aid of Ken McGrath as he recovers from heart surgery

Brian Cody and Davy Fitzgerald will manage the respective Leinster and Munster selections.

A BENEFIT MATCH is to be held in aid of Ken McGrath in late June as the Waterford hurling legend recovers from a serious recent heart operation.

McGrath was released from hospital last week after a 10-week period and the three-time Allstar is now undergoing a lengthy rehabilitation process with considerable financial implications.

As a result a committee has been formed – after consultation with the McGrath family – to organize the ‘Ken McGrath All Star Challenge’ in Walsh Park on Friday June 27th at 7.30pm.

The game will feature a Leinster selection managed by Brian Cody take on a Munster selection managed by Davy Fitzgerald. All Star winners and legends of the game who are all still active for their clubs will be in action on the night.

Match tickets will cost €10 at outlets to be announced. The committee has been established in conjunction with the GPA Past Players Advisory Board, McGrath’s club Mount Sion, Club Déise and the Waterford county board.

After the match there will be an All-Ireland championship preview night in Mount Sion GAA club hosted by WLR commentator Kieran O’Connor. A significant contribution will also be made to the Irish Heart Foundation at the personal request of Ken McGrath.

The launch took place tonight for the benefit game with ex-Waterford stars John Mullane, Tony Browne, Fergal Hartley and Dan Shanahan all in attendance. Browne, Eoin McGrath and Eoin Kelly are the former player representatives on the organising committee while the Eastern Player Rep is Mullane and the Western Player Rep is ex-defender Eoin Murphy.
