Kerry sensationally stun Offaly as Wexford sneak past Laois

Wexford’s late win means Offaly join them in the quarter-finals.

OFFALY AND WEXFORD advanced to the knockout stages of the Allianz Hurling League, but neither side will be pleased their performances in a rip-roaring day of action in Division 1B.

Offaly fell to Kerry for the first time since 1957 but it wasn’t enough for the Kingdom to secure their passage into the knockout stages after Wexford’s last gasp win over Laois.

Kerry were 2-18 to 2-17 winners over Offaly in Sunday’s shock result. In a thoroughly enjoyable game, Offaly led for the majority of the day but couldn’t put away their determined opponents.

An early goal from Joe Bergin left the Faithful four points ahead at the interval, but John Egan found the net for Kerry soon after the restart, signalling their intent.

James Mulrooney scored Offaly’s second goal but the Kingdom roared back into the contest with Egan proving inspirational from dead balls. Colum Harty fired past James Dempsey to level matters up before Egan and Shane Nolan secured a famous win.

Wexford’s late 0-22 to 0-21 win against Laois cruelly denied Kerry a spot in the last eight of the league.

Shane Tomkins’s late point handed Wexford the dramatic victory, after Laois ran them extremely close in Portlaoise.

Liam Dunne’s side led by 0-14 to 0-11 at half-time, but Laois began the second-half on top and scored five out of the next six points to move into the lead.

Lee Chin levelled the game in stoppage time and Tomkins won the game minutes later.

Kerry will take on Laois in the Division 1B relegation playoff.
