KERRY’S MINOR FOOTBALLERS began their All Ireland defence with a 22-point drubbing of Waterford at Fraher Field this evening.

Peter Keane’s team shot 2-17 from play over the hour to progress comfortably to a semi final against Clare next month.

Ferdia O’Brien bagged 2-1 with David Clifford (0-5), Sean O’Shea (0-4) and Dara Moynihan (0-3) also in prolific mood.

Hogan Cup man of the match David Clifford put the icing on the cake as he swerved an astonishing point between the posts in the last minute.

Waterford have never beaten Kerry at this grade and the away side blew them out of the water during a lop sided opening quarter.

With 478 patrons in attendance, David Clifford started the rout with a point after just 12 seconds.

The Kingdom monopolised the kickouts and reached double figures after just thirteen minutes.

Five of the six forwards got on the scoresheet with Clifford, Dara Moynihan and Sean O’Shea helping themselves to three points apiece.

Dylan Guiry had a penalty appeal turned down before Shane O’Meara opened Waterford’s account from a free on 22 minutes.

Ferdia O’Brien crashed the ball to the net a minute later after Clifford sprayed it across unselfishly. Moynihan concluded the first half scoring to push them 1-13 to 0-1 ahead.

O’Brien lashed home a second with only 26 seconds played in the second period. Brian Friel then added a brace to stretch the lead to 21 points (2-16 to 0-1).

Déise wing back Cathal Curran powered a consolation strike to the top corner of the Kerry net on 43 minutes.

New Kingdom boss Keane utilised his full quota of subs and Michael Potts, Tomás O’Connor and Darren Casey tagged on late singles. Waterford can now prepare for a play-off on April 27.
