Ireland's new US Ambassador met the President today

THE NEW UNITED States Ambassador to Ireland met with President Michael D Higgins today.

Kevin O’Malley visited Áras an Uachtaráin this afternoon to present Higgins with his credentials.

Last month the US Senate approved O’Malley’s appointment to the role, ending a 22-month vacancy following Dan Rooney’s departure.

He held dual citizenship in Ireland and America before renouncing his Irish citizenship to allow him take up an ambassadorial role here. His grandparents are from Westport, Co Mayo.

O’Malley was sworn into office by US Vice President Joe Biden in a ceremony in Washington DC on 30 September
