KERRY STAR KIERAN Donaghy has elaborated on his criticism of Joe Brolly, after the star slated the controversial RTÉ pundit in the aftermath of Sunday’s All-Ireland final win over Donegal.
Following the Kingdom’s triumph, Donaghy said: “Well Joe Brolly, what do you think of that?!” And, speaking last night on Newstalk’s Off the Ball, the star revealed that it was James O’Donoghue who inspired the line.
“It was James O’Donoghue who brought it up to me on the morning of the game.
“He said ‘Joe Brolly is some man to say the production line is gone’. I said ‘we’ll try our best to show him this evening’. I don’t know why it came into my head, but it just did.
“His article was ‘the production lines grinds to a halt in Kerry’. It was at a time when we were struggling in league games and I always say ‘never judge Kerry in the league’.”
Brolly was not the only journalist to dismiss Kerry’s chances this year, but Donaghy said he was particularly peeved by The Sunday Game analyst’s tone.
“We’d a few retirements and I’d say it was a small bit of lazy journalism really that he went that much at it.
“He was studying the facts of U21′s and no minors winning All-Irelands and that kind of stuff. But for us, it was all about winning the All-Ireland, and this Joe Brolly thing’s kind of gone a bit mad all over the place.”
Brolly, meanwhile, has responded to the original comments on Twitter…
