KIERAN MCGEENEY WILL join the Armagh backroom team for the 2014 season.

The former Kildare manager has been recruited by Orchard County boss Paul Grimley in a move confirmed by the Armagh GAA website this evening.

McGeeney’s six-year tenure as Kildare manager ended in controversial cirumstances last month after he lost a ballot by county delegates by a single vote, 29 to 28.

But the 2002 All-Ireland winning captain is now back involved with inter-county management for next season as he has joined Armagh backroom team.

It will mark an interesting role reversal as Grimley previously served as McGeeney’s managerial sidekick for two years in Kildare.

Now McGeeney will be the right-hand man as Armagh seek to improve on their 2013 campaign which ended with a qualifier defeat to Galway in July.

Peter McDonnell and Martin McQuillan will also join Grimley in his backroom team. Julie Davis, who was involved with Kildare in recent years, will be Armagh’s strength and conditioning coach while James Doyle will be the speed coach.

McGeeney enjoyed a stellar career with Armagh as he won an All-Ireland title in 2002, six Ulster crowns, a National football league title and three Allstar awards.
