Knee woes sideline Wozniacki

US Open appearance in doubt for the third seed as she withdraws from warm up event.

US OPEN THIRD seed Caroline Wozniacki has suffered an injury scare days out from the final Grand Slam of the season, as she retired from her New Haven Open semi-final.

The former top-ranked Dane lost the first set to Russian seventh seed Maria Kirilenko 7-5, and was forced to pull out of the tournament she had won the past four times with a right knee injury.

Wozniacki sustained the injury in the quarter-finals on Thursday, but called for the trainer immediately after dropping the first set and failed to continue.

“I could feel it from the start,” Wozniacki said.

“But, you know, it just started to get a bit worse. I decided to stop because if you don’t feel a hundred percent, you can’t compete at a hundred percent. It’s better to let it rest. I wasn’t going to win this match anyway if I’m not on a hundred percent fit level.”

It was Wozniacki’s first-ever loss at New Haven, after winning 20 straight since debuting at the event at age 18.

Kirilenko will meet second-seeded Czech Petra Kvitova in the final, after the 2011 Wimbledon champion discarded of fourth seed Sara Errani of Italy 6-1 6-3.

Kvitova hit eight aces on her way to victory, and dropped just three points of 23 behind her first serve.
