La Senza sit-in ends as KPMG agrees to pay up

The sit-in at the Liffey Valley branch of the lingerie chain ends after five days, with workers told they will get their wages.

LAID-OFF EMPLOYEES of the struggling La Senza have ended their sit-in at the Liffey Valley branch after five days.

The sit-in ended after workers accepted an improved offer from the chain’s administrators, KPMG, to end the sit in.

The 25 employees, who were made redundant on Monday, were owed wages from December and January, including overtime payments.

While neither party would comment on the terms of the settlement, it is understood that KPMG’s offer will see all staff paid the wages, overtime and holiday pay that was due to them.

Michael Meegan from the Mandate trade union told TheJournal.ie that the revised offer had been received at around 4:30pm this afternoon, and communicated to the staff at Liffey Valley who were happy to accept its terms.

Though the staff were in “high spirits” at the happy resolution to the dispute, the victory was bittersweet – as each of them will still be made redundant with their outlets having closed this week.

“All of their jobs are gone, and that was the bitter thing about it,” Meegan said.

“The one message that was coming clear from them all was that [such disputes] were going to be a regular thing, within the retail sector,” he added.

“They were encouraging any other retail workers out there, who aren’t in unions, to start talking to them and joining them.”

La Senza fell into administration on Monday, with workers told they were being made redundant with immediate effect.

The dispute was raised in the Dáil on Wednesday when some of the affected staff were present to witness a Dáil discussion on their dispute.
