Harps close the gap on UCD, while Drogheda strike late to snatch point in Cabo

First Division leaders UCD aren’t in action until tomorrow evening.

FINN HARPS KEPT the pressure on SSE Airtricity First Division leaders UCD with a comfortable 3-1 win away to basement side Athlone Town on Friday evening.

Elsewhere, Drogheda United equalised five minutes into stoppage time to leave Cabinteely with a 2-2 draw and clinch what could yet be a vital point in the battle for the  play-off places.

Shelbourne remain in third place after they came from a goal down to beat Wexford FC 2-1, while at Eamonn Deacy Park, Longford Town put four past Galway United in a 4-1 victory which dents the hosts’ promotion hopes.

With leaders UCD not in action until Saturday evening, Finn Harps took full advantage and closed the gap at the top to four points.

They fell behind to an early goal from Nika Kalandarishvili but a brace from Nathan Boyle, one on either side of half time, had them 2-1 up nine minutes into the second half before Keith Cowan made the points safe eight minutes from the end.

Two goals apiece from Jamie Doyle and Dylan McGlade ensured a straightforward night for Longford in Galway, the hosts’ consolation only arriving in the 90th minute through Carlton Ubaezuonu.

Ciaran Kelly was Drogheda’s late, late hero against Cabinteely in a grandstand finish at Stradbook.

Cabo were 2-0 up early on thanks to two goals in the space of three minutes from Karl Manahan and Keith Dalton.

Sean Brennan’s penalty on the stroke of half time gave the visitors a lifeline, but Cabo weathered the storm until deep into stoppage time when Kelly struck his late leveller.

In Ferrycarraig Park, Greg Moorehouse’s second-half double cancelled out Aaron Dobbs’ opener for Wexford and ensured that Shels remain third behind UCD and Harps.

SSE Airtricity League First Division results:

  • Athlone Town 1-3 Finn Harps
  • Cabinteely 2-2 Drogheda United
  • Galway United 1-4 Longford Town
  • Wexford FC 1-2 Shelbourne
