Leinster Junior Cup [First round]

St. Mary’s College 8

St. Michael’s College 28

St. Michaels’s proved too strong for Mary’s at Lakelands this afternoon, with Gavin Knaggs’ side running in four tries as the losing side managed only one. Blindside flanker Rory Murphy and exciting centre Chris Carey scored for the Ailesbury Road School, while lock Jack Dunne grabbed a brace. Out-half Harry Byrne scored seven points off the tee.

Newbridge College 40

Castleknock College 12

The Kildare school demonstrated their pace and handling skills to comprehensively dismantle Castleknock at Templeville Road. Tom Connolly, Cian Murphy, Luke Morris and Ben Howlett all managed to cross the whitewash as Newbridge clocked up a 33-0 half time lead. Castleknock did manage to score two tries in the second 40 minutes, but were well beaten in the end.

Cistercian College Roscrea 0

Catholic University School 6

The recent development of the sporting facilities at CUS appear to be reaping rewards already as the Leeson Street-based school recorded this hard-fought win over Roscrea. Rob Mackey’s first half penalty had given CUS a 3-0 lead at the break, before the same player repeated that feat in the closing stages.

CBC Monkstown 0

Blackrock College 37

The reigning Junior Cup champions marked out their credentials for further success this year as they ran in five tries in a convincing win over Monkstown at Donnybrook. Reece Plumtree, Patrick Patterson and Andrew Savage all got amongst the scoring, while Peter O’Reilly was accurate off the tee. The Justin Vanstone-coached ‘Rock will be hard to beat this season.

Clongowes Wood College 16

Presentation College Bray 11

There was high drama in this nail-biting win for Clongowes at Wanderers RFC, as Pres Bray had a late attack held up over the tryline, following shortly after what proved to be a match-winning try from Clongowes’ Sean McCrohan. The clash was 11-5 in the Clane school’s favour at the interval, before two Elliot Ryan penalties leveled matters, setting up the thrilling denouement.

St. Andrew’s College 0

St. Gerard’s School 0

Nothing could separate this pair at Stradbrook and the first round clash will now go to a replay, scheduled for 3pm on the 11th of February at the same venue.

The eighth and final first round tie in the Leinster Junior Cup takes place tomorrow:

  • Belvedere College SJ v Gonzaga College SJ [Donnybrook, 3pm]

Munster Junior Cup [Quarter-final first round]

Castletroy College 27

St. Munchin’s College 7

Defending champions Castletroy ensured themselves a home quarter-final against Rockwell, while this loss means St. Munchin’s will travel to PBC in Cork. Castletroy powered into a 12-0 half time lead on the 4G pitch at the University of Limerick, and then extended their advantage to 19-0 shortly after the break. Despite a second half try from Munchin’s, the Newtown school finished the game on top.

Presentation Brothers College Cork 8

Christian Brothers College Cork 5

Ian Lehane’s Pres team emerged victorious from an intense battle with their Cork rivals, thereby ensuring a home quarter-final against St. Munchin’s. CBC took a 35th minute lead in this clash at Musgrave Park thanks to an unconverted try, before a James Broderick penalty try got Pres onto the scoreboard.

Peter Sylvester’s 55th minute try then catapulted PBC into a lead they never relinquished, surviving a late, missed penalty attempt for CBC. The losers now face a trip to Crescent for their quarter-final.
