Limerick's minors make it back-to-back Munster titles with win over Waterford

The Déise came up short in the replay at Semple Stadium.

Electric Ireland Munster minor hurling championship final replay

BRIAN RYAN’S LIMERICK are toasting another Electric Ireland Munster minor hurling championship title this evening.

The young Shannonsiders beat Waterford by six points in an entertaining Semple Stadium replay.

For the second successive year, Waterford suffered replay heartbreak at the hands of Limerick, who clinched back-to-back provincial minor crowns for the first time ever.
Limerick march onto the All-Ireland semi-finals but Waterford must lift themselves for a quarter-final clash with Dublin in Thurles next Sunday.

And in the final quarter tonight, the Deise simply had no answers to Limerick’s power play. In the final 16 minutes, plus stoppage time, Limerick outscored their opponents by 0-9 to 0-1.

Vice-captain Ronan Lynch top-scored with ten points but Tom Morrissey’s second half contribution was sensational.

And in a devastating scoring run, Morrissey hit three of his five points in quick succession to turn a one-point deficit into a 0-19 to 0-17 lead. Limerick sensed glory and they wasted no time in kicking for home – with Lynch, Morrissey, Barry Nash and Peter Casey notching 0-20 between them.

And yet Limerick were 0-10 to 0-13 behind approaching half-time – and 0-13 to 0-16 adrift early in the second half. Patrick Curran posted eight points for Waterford in the first half, including six frees, but the young Deise hotshot was held scoreless in the second half.

And in front of 6165 spectators, this defeat capped a thoroughly miserable week for Waterford hurling. Their U21s lost to Cork in last week’s Munster final and the seniors crashed out of the championship against Wexford in Kilkenny last Saturday night.
At half-time, Waterford were 0-13 to 0-11 clear but Limerick came good down the home straight to retain the provincial silverware.

Scorers for Limerick: Ronan Lynch 0-10 (6f, 3 65s), Tom Morrissey 0-5, Peter Casey & Barry Nash 0-3 each, Colin Ryan 0-2, Robbie Hanley 0-1.

Scorers for Waterford: Patrick Curran 0-8 (6f), Colm Roche 0-4, Shane Ryan & Eddie Meaney 0-2 each, Cormac Curran & Peter Hogan 0-1 each.
