Jason Robinson: Exceptional Kearney should start as Lions fullback

There is still hope for Wales’ Leigh Halfpenny though.

FORMER ENGLAND AND LIONS star Jason Robinson has come up with a solution for Warren Gatland’s Halfpenny or Kearney dilemma – start them both.

Robinson, a World Cup winner with England in 2003 and Lions tourist to Australia and New Zealand, also believes Brian O’Driscoll should captain the squad to take on the Wallabies this summer.

Rob Kearney excelled on the 2009 Lions Tour to South Africa – pushing Jamie Roberts close for their player of the series – and won the 2012 European Player of the Year. He has struggled to make an impact on games since his return from a back injury and many opponents actively avoid kicking the ball in his direction.

Leigh Halfpenny won the Six Nations player of the championship accolade after kicking 74 points, and winning two man-of-the-match awards, for Wales on their way to the title. He has also been the best player on a poor Cardiff Blues team this season.

There are five Irishmen in Robinson’s starting XV to face the Aussies in Brisbane in the First Test.

Brian O’Driscoll, who Robinson played alongside on the 2001 and 2005 tours, is named at outside centre with Jonsthan Sexton getting the nod at outhalf. Cian Healy and Rory Best are also selected in Robinson’s front row.
