Chelsea 0-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Welcome to our coverage of the first game of the day, with both Chelsea and Tottenham stumbling but chasing that Champions League place. Who can get back on track here?

The teams:

Chelsea: Cech, Bosingwa, Cahill, Terry, Cole, Essien, Lampard, Ramires, Mata, Sturridge, Drogba. Subs: Turnbull, Luiz, Torres, Mikel, Malouda, Meireles, Kalou.

Tottenham: Friedel, Walker, Kaboul, Gallas, Assou-Ekotto, Modric, Sandro, Parker, Bale, Van der Vaart, Adebayor. Subs: Cudicini, Saha, Defoe, Kranjcar, Rose, Livermore, Nelsen.

And we’re off…

A slow enough start, only a Drogba-Lampard link-up threatening a goal with the two teams feeling each other out.

The vigour has really gone out of Spurs.  They look a jaded team. Redknapp probably overused his key men early in the season.

Both teams just passing the ball about when in possession. It’s a very methodical game so far.

This has been a tedious enough 20 minutes. Any sign of a chance lads?

No penalty! Lampard went over in the box from William Gallas’s nudge but Martin Atkinson waves it away. Chelsea beginning to look the better team.

All Chelsea at the moment, but without really penetrating. Lot of possession around the Tottenham box.

It’s picked up a bit of pace now with Lampard just slamming Bale, giving away a daangerous free-kick to the right of the Chelsea goal…

This isn’t an advertisement for the Premier League.

How did Spurs miss!?!?! Modric got space down the left, squared for Rafael van der Vaart who hit it straight at Cech from four yards out. Ashley Cole then blocked the follow-up before Emmanuel Adebayor headed over. Should have been 1-0!

And that’s half-time. Any action compressed into those last few seconds. It’s mostly been awful stuff. That will suit Spurs, who would be far happier with the draw.

Second half is underway.

It’s a little more feisty in the first two minutes of the second half. Chelsea pressing and looking to make something happen. They need to.

Close for Chelsea. Drogba does what Drogba does by winning an aerial ball and powering a header forward for Sturridge to run onto. He flashes his shot just wide though.

Spurs have managed to take a bit of sting out of Chelsea at the moment. Back to what it was: “patient” passing around the midfield.

Spurs have a rare break and almost score. Bale cuts through the middle before releasing an open Kyle Walker on the right. He fores at goal well, but it’s wide.

Adebayor has lifted things, elevating the pace of the Spurs game. They’ve been the better team the last few minutes.

The game finally beginning to open up, with Modric getting on the ball much more. We may yet have a last half-hour completely out of synch with the previous 60.

Another Chelsea penalty appeal turned down as Ramires falls under Assou-Ekotto pressure. He might have had a legitimate grievance there.

It’s end-to-end at the moment with Terry forced to just head the ball back to Cech after a Kaboul raid down the left. Now Chelsea back up at the other end… intriguing now.

Mata smashes the post from a free-kick! Beautifully struck but just not precise enough and Luiz can’t quite get close enough to the rebound.

Fernando Torres on for Michael Essien, as Chelsea chase the win.

And that seemed a typical Drogba chance. Chest it in the box, turn and finish…except without the finish. Should really have been 1-0 to Chelsea. Twelve minutes left.

And should have been a goal at the other end! Gary Cahill steps up for offside, Adebayor beats the trap and takes the ball wide of chest but, just as he finishes, Cahill has raced back to clear. It was a soft effort from Adebayor.

Bale hits the bar from the corner with a header! Suddenly this has come to the life.

Lampard now tests Friedel. Despite dross we served for an hour, there is increasing evidence we might see a winner.

Four minutes of stoppage time…

It doesn’t like it’s going to happen here. Not enough spark.

Bale swings in a free but Cahill powers it clear with a header.

Bale drives a free at goal, Cech saves though…

Full-time: Chelsea 0-0 Tottenham

A mostly dismal game despite a bit of drama at the end. But that will suit Spurs just fine. Given that this was against the team directly behind them in the table and with five points of a gap, it will feel like they’ve arrested the recent slide.

Welcome to the Premier League three o’clocks, where there’s a fair amount of intrigue. Can Liverpool get back on track after the QPR calamity? Can Wigan help save themselves with a win at Anfield? Who will win the big relegation face-off between Bolton and Blackburn? Can the former recover so quickly after the trauma of last week? Can Arsenal strengthen their grip on third?
