AS IT HAPPENED

As it happened: Liverpool vs Chelsea, Premier League

Will resting his starters against Real Madrid pay off for Brendan Rodgers today?

LIVERPOOL FACE CHELSEA at Anfield today and the home side are 12 points off the visitors who are unbeaten atop the Premier League table. Last year’s 2-0 win for Chelsea here cost Liverpool the Premier League title so there will be a little extra bite in the clash today (or a little less, given the absence of Suarez).

As always, we’d love to hear your thoughts on the game. E-mail will@thescore.ie, tweet @thescore_iepost a message to our Facebook wall, or leave a comment below.

Hello everyone and welcome to our liveblog of Liverpool vs Chelsea!

Chelsea are massive favourites today after their unbeaten start to the season while Liverpool are struggling for form, points and goals lately.

Brendan Rodgers rested his starters against Real Madrid on Tuesday but will that make any difference today?

Rodgers said he would consider starting his B team again today… but that was never likely to happen, was it?

Emre Can is the only major holdover – what do people think of the team?

And Costa is back for Chelsea in what is a formidable unit.

Liverpool fans might want to look away now… this is what happened the last time they hosted Chelsea.

A lot of people are tweeting that Toure should be in the team ahead of Lovren.

I know Lovren has been poor enough but are you sure you want Toure?

NewSoccerNews / YouTube

In fairness to Toure, he was pretty solid against an excellent Real Madrid attack.

And for Chelsea, it is the return of stud Diego Costa. Any chance he matches this total today?

Daniel Sturridge says on BT that ‘this is just another game’ for Liverpool. Surely with all the pressure on Rodgers, this is one of the biggest games of the season?

If there is a repeat of Liverpool’s home game against Real Madrid, things could get very dicey for Rodgers.

There was some good news to come out of that Sturridge interview for Liverpool fans.

This exchange sums up a lot of Liverpool fans frustration with Brendan Rodgers’ transfer policy.

You’ll Never Walk Alone is being belted out around Anfield and we are less than five minutes to kickoff.

1 min – We are off here!

2 min – Early Liverpool corner after Can’s shot is deflected over.

2 min – Courtois claims easily.

2 mins – A long Gerrard free kick is headed out to Coutinho but he balloons his shot over.

3 min- Liverpool have started at a really fast tempo reminiscent of their play last year. Looks like Can is man-marking Matic too.

4 min – Skrtel plays a long ball over the top but Balotelli is about 5 yards offside.

5 min – Liverpool threaten again but John Terry heads a Mario Balotelli cross clear. Balotelli has started brightly too.

6 mins – Can dissposses Hazard on the left wing and clears. Can’s almost done more in seven minutes than Allen has in his Liverpool career.

GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Chelsea

Emre Can’s long-range shot comes off Gary Cahill’s back and goes in. Liverpool have been well worth their lead.

10 min – Oscar tries to slip Hazard in behind the Liverpool defence but his pass drifts out for a goal kick. First time Chelsea have threatened the Liverpool goal.

Here is the Liverpool goal. Unlucky on Cahill.

One man can’t believe what just happened.

Goal! Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea

A Fabregas corner gets flicked on by John Terry and after Mignolet saves the initial effort, Gary Cahill buries the rebound. The ref needed to consult the goal line technology before he gave it.

16 min – You have to question Liverpool’s defending again as three Chelsea players were relatively unmarked in the six yard box.

18 min – Coutinho runs through the Chelsea defenders before slipping in Balotelli who finishes well. Unfortunately for Liverpool fans, Balotelli was a couple of yards offside and the goal isn’t given.

19 min – Liverpool have a corner after a run by Johnson.

20 min – A lovely short corner routine results in Henderson having a shot that is blocked into the path of Sterling. His volley is deflected wide by Cahill for another corner.

What do you think, was this over the line?

@VinesChelsea / Vine

21 min – Costa shoves Skrtel in the back in the Liverpool box and the two exchange words. The ref gives Costa a warning and Liverpool have a free.

24 min – Chelsea have a free kick in an advanced position on the left wing after Glen Johnson bundles over Eden Hazard.

25 min – Liverpool head clear and they now have a corner after Coutinho drives through the Chelsea defenders again and has a stinging shot pushed away.

27 min – Sterling makes a run down the left wing and tries to find Balotelli with an outside of the boot pass but nothing comes of it.

30 min – Liverpool are having a decent spell of possession around the Chelsea box with Henderson and Can prominent but they haven’t been able to break Chelsea down.

You know the two teams don’t like each other when the commentator mentions how little ‘love is lost’ between the sides.

33 min – Oscar slides a beautiful pass into the path of Hazard on the left hand edge of the box but Glen Johnson is able to block the Belgian’s shot.

35 min – Liverpool have given the ball away sloppily in the last few minutes and this time an errant Lovren pass is picked off by Ramires who squares it to Hazard on the edge of the box. Once again, Johnson makes a great block.

36 min – Costa gets away from Lovren inside the box but Moreno cuts out his cross. Lovren hasn’t had a good few minutes.

39 min – The ball has been sticking to Hazard in the last few minutes. Could have scored a few goals but in fairness to Glen Johnson, he has marshalled him well.

40 mins – Ivanovic blows by Lovren on the touchline but Mignolet holds his cross. Moments later, Hazard gets another shot off on the edge of the box but the keeper holds onto that too. Liverpool are under serious pressure at the moment.

43 mins – Sterling gets booked for obstruction on Ramires. Chelsea have a free kick about 35 yards out in a central enough area.

43 mins – Lovren heads clear and then Sterling wins a free kick after an over-zealous challenge from Fabregas.

HT Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea

The game peters out in the last few minutes but that was a very exciting first half for large periods. Liverpool took the lead through a deflected Emre Can drive before Gary Cahill equalised with the help of goal line technology.

Costa and Skrtel continued their battle on the way to the tunnel for half-time. Wouldn’t be a major surprise for one or both of them to get sent off.

We are off in the second half!

46 mins – Chelsea are keeping the pressure on Liverpool to begin the half. Costa wins an early corner off Skrtel.

48 mins – Ivanovic has just gotten booked for dragging back Sterling as the winger tries to break out of his own box.

Liverpool work a nice move as Balotelli and Coutinho combine to free Can on the right touchline but the Turk’s pass is poor and Chelsea clear easily.

50 mins – Hazard flicks the ball towards the Liverpool box and Lovren can only head the ball backwards into the path of Costa who hooks the ball just over the bar.

51 min – Sterling uses his body well to win the ball off Oscar in his own half. The winger motors down the left side but Ivanovic steps in to blast his cross into the stands.

52 min – Coutinho slips the ball to Sterling on the left side of the box and the winger cuts inside and drives a low shot to Courtois’ left but the Belgian gets a strong to it. Chelsea break down the other end and have a corner after Skrtel blocks Hazard’s shot.

56 mins – It’s an even enough game now with both sides getting possession in threatening territory.

60 mins – The BT commentator says it is the first ‘flat spot’ of the game and he isn’t wrong. The pace has dropped a little since the break.

This will cheer Liverpool fans up a bit.

We have our first goalmouth action in awhile but Courtois claims Johnson’s cross without much fuss.

61 mins – Liverpool fans are incensed after Ivanovic goes down easily and the referee blows it up. Cahill could have put the ball out of play but didn’t and Liverpool lost a counter-attacking chance as a result.

64 mins – Balotelli fouls Hazard just outside the box and Fabregas has a good chance on the left hand side.

65 mins – Moreno scrambles the ball away but Chelsea have possession again.

GOAL CHELSEA! Liverpool 1-2 Chelsea

Azpilicueta blows by Coutinho on the left touchline and Mignolet can only parry the cross into the path of Costa who slams it into the net.

Borini and Allen are on for Coutinho and Can.

Here is the goal that gave Chelsea the lead.

BTMV / Vine

70 mins – Borini’s first involvement is to foul Cahill in the corner. Also, the replay shows that Azpilicueta might have let the ball go over the touchline in the build-up to the goal.

72 mins – Liverpool are pressing for an equaliser and John Terry needs to be at full-stretch to clear Henderson’s cross.

73 mins – The ball goes towards Joe Allen for the first time but he shoulders it and the ball rolls out for a throw in.

74 mins – Moreno whips in a ball for the first time and Henderson connects with a volley from inside the box. It looks destined for the corner but Matic heads it away.

77 mins – Terry blocks Balotelli’s shot and Liverpool have a corner.

Rickie Lambert is on for Mario Balotelli.

79 mins – Allen tries to slip Moreno in on the left touchline but Willian intercepts his pass and clears.

81 mins – Henderson and Sterling combine to release Johnson on the right wing. He cuts inside Azpilcueta but John Terry heads his cross away.

82 mins – Costa makes an undetected run into the Liverpool box and squares for Hazard in the six yard box but his flick is deflected wide.

83 mins – Liverpool have a free kick on the right wing but Skrtel fouls a Chelsea defender and Chelsea can clear their lines.

85 mins – Liverpool having a lot of possession but have no cutting edge. Gerrard slips a nice ball to Henderson on the right wing but his cross is hit straight to Willian, who clears.

86 mins – Costa finally gets a yellow for a late tackle on Johnson.

87 mins – Lambert knocks down a ball to Gerrard on the edge of the box and his left footed volley is chested clear by Cahill.

88 mins – The replays show that Cahill handled the Gerrard shot. Strangely, there weren’t any appeals outside of Gerrard.

89 mins – Costa has obviously been trained well by Mourinho. There is a coming together between him and Skrtel and the striker hits the deck with a minute left. Drogba comes on for the Spaniard.

90 mins – We have 5 minutes of added time here.

Michael Owen has awarded man of the match to Matic.

92 mins – Liverpool have a throw in in Chelsea territory but nothing comes of it and the visitors clear.

Here is that handball appeal.

fcbtitto / Vine

This sums up Lambert’s contribution as Chelsea run out the clock in the Liverpool half.

Neil Sherwin / Vine

95 mins – Felipe Luis is on for Hazard.

FT Liverpool 1-2 Chelsea

Chelsea hold on to win at Anfield and in truth, they deserved it. Besides a late penalty appeal, Liverpool never really came close to equalising and Diego Costa deserved his goal after making a nuisance of himself all day.
