OLYMPIC COUNCIL OF IRELAND President Pat Hickey made history in London today when he was elected to the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Hickey becomes only the second Irishman to sit at the Olympic movement’s top table following on from Lord Killanin who became IOC President in 1980.
The Phibsboro native was elected to sit on the 16-man IOC board for the next four years, taking him through to the Rio Games in the summer of 2016.
Along with 10 other board members, he will serve under President Jacques Rogge and the IOC’s four vice-presidents.
“It is a huge honour for me personally and for Ireland and I am looking forward to playing my part as a team player on the Executive Board for the next four years,” Hickey, 67, said after today’s election.
The IOC Executive Board is responsible for the overall administration and management of the committee’s affairs.
Since 2010, Hickey has served as a member of the Coordination Commission for the 2016 Olympic Games. He is also currently the President of the European Olympic Committees and the Senior Vice-President of the Association of National Olympic Committees.
