Longford Town 2 Derry City 3

RORY PATTERSON’S QUICK-FIRE second-half double sent Derry City back into third spot and broke Longford Town hearts at the City Calling Stadium.

The Candystripes’ leading scorer took his season’s tally to 17 goals with two strikes in the space of two minutes to turn this game on its head.

It looked like Longford were on course to clinch their first home win of the season having twice taken the lead in either half.

However, the win takes Derry two points ahead of Shamrock Rovers in third with European football all but secured for the Foylesiders, while Longford still languish at the foot of the table.

Longford striker David O’Sullivan had put his side into a 12th-minute lead with a close-range strike as the City defence looked all at seas.

Barry McNamee then equalised for City six minutes before half-time.

However, the league’s bottom club were awarded a penalty on 63 minutes when Niclas Vemmlund brought down Kaleem Simon and O’Sullivan slotted home the resultant spotkick.

With Longford on course for a shock win, Patterson then took the game by the scruff of the neck with a quick brace. He latched onto McNamee’s deflected shot and placed the ball in the corner.

And two minutes later he was on target again when he picked up a superb pass by sub Josh Daniels and clinically found the net to win the game for the visitors.
