Man in his 20s dies after his van struck a tree in Longford

He is the 192nd person to die on Irish roads this year.

A 29-YEAR-OLD MAN was seriously injured when the van he was driving struck a tree in Longford yesterday afternoon.

He was taken to Midlands Regional Hospital in Mullingar where he was later pronounced dead.

Gardaí are now investigating the collision which occurred at Ballinalee just before 2.30pm.

The road remains closed for forensic examinations.

The death toll on Irish roads for 2014 is now 192, a greater number than at this time last year.

According to garda traffic statistics, 78 of those killed were drivers.
