Fagan proves the match-winner as Saints get off the mark

The St Patrick’s Athletic striker scored midway through the second half to see off Longford Town at the City Calling Stadium.

ST PATRICK’S ATHLETIC earned their first win of the new SSE Airtricity League Premier Division campaign away to Longford Town tonight.

The Saints, who lost out 3-1 to Galway United on the opening day of the season, had striker Christy Fagan to thank as he lashed home a volley from close range on 65 minutes.

Both Fagan and Billy Dennehy both came close in the first half before Longford had a man sent off on the stroke of half-time as full-back Conor Powell brought down Conan Byrne and received his second yellow card.

Midway through the second half, Fagan broke the deadlock with his second league goal of 2016 — blasting past Longford Town goalkeeper Paul Skinner from six yards out.

And Skinner had to make a superb save to prevent the visitors from doubling their advantage before the full-time whistle.

LONGFORD TOWN: Paul Skinner, Noel Haverty (Pat Flynn 80′), Conor Powell, Mark Rossiter, Kevin O’Connor (Daniel O’Reilly 46′), Mark Hughes, Philip Gannon, Kealan Dillon (Jamie Mullhall 74′), Kaleem Simon, Josh O’Hanlon, David O’Sullivan.

ST PATRICK’S ATHLETIC: Brendan Clarke, Darren Dennehy, Ian Bermingham, Shane McEleney, Ger O’Brien, Graham Kelly, Billy Dennehy, David Cawley, Conan Byrne, Mark Timlin (Keith Treacy 54′), Christy Fagan (Dinny Corcoran 80′).
