ROCHDALE GOALKEEPER DAVID LUCAS admitted that he is “lucky” to be alive after he was left unconscious by a nasty collision against Sheffield United.
The 34-year-old stopper was treated by medics at Bramall Lane and later hospitalised following an accidental clash with United defender Neil Collins in first-half stoppage time.
Although he was out cold, Lucas later learned that the quick-thinking of Blades striker Richard Cresswell may have avoided a tragic end to the incident.
Cresswell, who played with Lucas at Preston, was quickest to react and rolled the keeper into the recovery position to stop him from swallowing his tongue.
“As dramatic as it sounds to say he saved my life, maybe he did,” Lucas told BBC Sport afterwards. ”It was lucky on my part that someone as sensible and quick-thinking like Cressy reacted as quickly as he did.”
Lucas was later given the all-clear by doctors and said he hopes to return to action next weekend.
Sheffield United won the game 3-0.
