Macklin to bounce back with title shot against Martinez?

Irish fighter seems to have impressed American TV execs with his display against Felix Sturm.

IRISH MIDDLEWEIGHT MATTHEW MACKLIN could be in line for a lucrative title shot against the WBC Diamond Champion Sergio Martinez, writes Gerry Callan in today’s Irish Daily Star (print edition).

Despite being edged out by Felix Sturm in a controversial split decision in Cologne last month, the 29-year-old Birmingham-born fighter impressed American TV execs, with manager Brian Peters hinting that a high-profile St. Patrick’s Day bout in Madison Square Garden is a definite possibility.

Macklin, who flew out to New York for talks yesterday, is expected to return to the ring in October when a rematch against Sturm for the WBA title could be on the cards.
