‘Mad Men’ and ‘Modern Family’ win big at the Emmys

The advertising drama and comedy mockumentary take the biggest TV awards going.

‘Mad Men’ and ‘Modern Family’ were the biggest winners at the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles last night.

Sixties-set advertising drama ‘Mad Men’ landed the Best Drama award for the third straight year, while the show also took the award for outstanding writing for a drama series.

Comedy mockumentary ‘Modern Family’, meanwhile, won Best Comedy as well as taking awards for best supporting actor in a comedy series (Eric Stonestreet, as Cameron Tucker) and for outstanding writing in a comedy series.

Worldwide smash ‘Glee’ took two awards, led by Jane Lynch who won best supporting actress in a comedy series as acid-tongued cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester. Ryan Murphy was named best director in a comedy series.

HBO’s ‘Temple Grandin’ stole some of the thunder from stablemate miniseries ‘The Pacific’, winning best made-for-TV movie while Claire Danes was named outstanding lead actress for the format.

In the acting stakes, Bryan Cranston of ‘Breaking Bad’ was best actor in a drama, with Kyra Sedgwick taking the equivalent female award for ‘The Closer’. In the comedy categories, Jim Parsons of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ was best actor, with Edie Falco of ‘Nurse Jackie’ named best actress.

Al Pacino was also among the winners, named as best actor in a TV movie or miniseries for his lead role in the HBO film ‘You Don’t Know Jack’.

The event was fronted by ‘Late Night’ host Jimmy Fallon.
