A MAN HAS died after getting into difficulty while kayaking yesterday evening.
The man was one of a group of seven experienced paddlers who were caught in a sudden swell due to heavy rainfalls near Lough Dan in County Wicklow shortly after 5pm.
The kayakers were paddling in the Inchavore River, which flows from near the Sally Gap to Lough Dan. The river is a Grade Five, or expert level, river.
The deceased man has been described as a “very capable paddler” who was studying to be an outdoor instructor.
The other kayakers attempted to help the man and Dublin Coast Guard’s rescue helicopter was sent to assist.
Three people were taken to Tallaght Hospital, but one man was pronounced dead.
