Man United adding competition for De Gea as Victor Valdes set to sign

The 32-year-old will provide back-up for his fellow Spaniard after agreeing an 18-month deal.

MANCHESTER UNITED ARE set to sign Spanish international goalkeeper Victor Valdes.

The 32-year-old, who was number one at Barcelona for over a decade before departing the Catalan giants last summer, was invited to train with the Premier League club for the past two months as he regained his fitness from an knee injury suffered back in March.

And manager Louis van Gaal, who handed Valdes his Barca debut in 2002, has obviously been impressed as the free agent has agreed an 18-month deal, according to reports.

He has vast experience at the top both at club level and internationally — having won six La Liga titles, three Champions Leagues, a World Cup and the 2012 European Championship.

While Valdes will be expected to provide back-up for current first choice David De Gea, United’s best player this season, the move is bound to fuel speculation that the former Atletico Madrid stopper could be in line for a return to Spain.
