Mannix the difference as Donaghy's Austin Stacks see off Laune Rangers in Kerry relegation fight

Kerry’s totemic forward chipped in with two points to help his side retain senior status.

A GOAL AND three points from David Mannix helped Austin Stacks to a 2 – 10 to 1- 6 win over Laune Rangers in today’s Kerry Senior Football relegation play-off.

The match had originally been set for yesterday afternoon in Killarney, but the waterlogged pitch merely made for a stay of execution for Rangers.

The opening portion of the game was tightly contested with Mike Frank Russell opening the scoring for the Killorglin outfit before Mannix responded with a powerful finish after latching on to a long ball.

David Costello would raise a green flag for Rangers to put them 1 – 2 to 1 – 0 ahead. However, Stacks’ eye for a maximum score ensured they would keep their noses in front and Denis McElligott’s goal gave them a slender advantage at 1- 2 to 2 – 0. Mannix and Donaghy would stretch the lead for Stacks before the interval, but Russell and Kieran Doona almost erased the deficit before the break, 1 – 4 to 2 – 2 at the break.

The game’s third quarter would prove to be Rangers’ undoing as Mannix set his side on course for a commanding four point lead. Only points from Russell and John Sheehan got the Killorglin side’s scoreboard ticking upwards and Stacks duly picked off five further sights of the posts to send Laune Rangers into intermediate football.
