PEACE ACTIVIST MARGARETTA D’Arcy has been moved from Limerick Prison to the Dóchas women’s prison at Mountjoy in Dublin today.

The 79-year-old campaigner is spending three months in prison for refusing to stay out of unauthorised zones at Shannon Airport in protests against the use of the airport by US military planes.

She was arrested at her home in Galway in January after refusing to sign a court bond pledging to stay away from the facility. TheJournal.ie understands that she was moved to the Dóchas centre in the early afternoon today as a place became available.

D’Arcy has been undergoing treatment for cancer and concerns were expressed about how her healthcare would be managed when she was first jailed.

There have been a series of protest since her imprisonment, calling for her release and recently, President Higgins’ wife Sabina, who is a friend of the campaigner, visited her at the prison on Limerick. Just this week, Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams also paid her a visit.
