This high-profile member of Fianna Fáil's 'old guard' WON'T be on the ticket

Martin Mansergh got just 37 votes at a selection convention last night.

FORMER TD AND senator Martin Mansergh won’t be on the ticket for Fianna Fáil in the upcoming general election – after failing to be selected at last night’s selection convention in Tipperary.

Mansergh, who is best known for his pivotal role in the Northern Ireland peace process, was one of five candidates bidding for the nod from the party in Tipperary.

However, he garnered just 37 votes from delegates last night.

Jackie Cahill, a councillor and former president of the ICMSA, was selected to go forward, with 454 votes.

Elsewhere, Councillor John Lahart was selected as a candidate in Dublin South West.

The businessman was also a candidate in last year’s by-election, which was won by the AAA’s Paul Murphy.

Former TD Charlie O’Connor, who lost his seat in 2011, had also been bidding for a place on the ticket.

In Waterford, meanwhile, members selected Councillor Mary Butler to contest the election.

She was the only candidate selected at the convention in Lawlors Hotel, Dungarvan.
