GERRY ADAMS IS being given a run for money on Twitter these days.
Martin McGuinness was live-tweeting the cricket late into the night — and, only for the fact that he had a busy day of deputy first ministering to do, said he would have stayed up to watch the whole thing.
The Sinn Féin politician surprised many radio listeners this morning with an appearance on RTÉ’s John Murray Show earlier to talk exclusively about the sport, telling the host he thought it was a “great game”.
“Obviously since Ireland’s risen to such prominence in cricket over the course of the last number of years I’ve taken a particular interest,” McGuinness said, over the phone.
I have to say I thought last night’s performance against one of the world greats of cricket, the West Indies, was absolutely tremendous.
McGuinness admitted he “never played cricket in my life” but said that he had played rounders as a child in Derry.
“That’s the closest I got to it.”
The Deputy First Minister went on to say that he was a “mad sports fan” and that he would support an Ireland team “if we were playing tiddlywinks”.
McGuinness’s support for the ‘foreign’ sport has thrown up a few wry ‘was it for this?’ style responses on Twitter…
