Mayo's roads are being blessed - but there are no miracles expected

Mayo is following in the footsteps of Australia, where the blessing takes place in certain areas each year.

ROADS IN MAYO will be blessed on Easter Sunday as road deaths in the county increased dramatically last year.

Eleven people were killed on the county’s roads in 2014 compared to six the year previous.

According to the Road Safety Authority 53 people have died on Mayo roads since 2009.

All Catholic and Church of Ireland churches will take part in the blessings next week.

Road Safety Officer with Mayo County Council Noel Gibbons told TheJournal.ie:

We don’t expect any miracles to take place, it’s all about raising awareness and getting road safety on the agenda.

Mayo is following in the footsteps of Australia, where the blessing takes place in certain areas each year.
