Tyrone squeezed through to the All-Ireland quarter finals thanks to a one point win over a wasteful Mayo side at Croke Park in Round 3 of the qualifiers. A run of six unanswered points  midway through the second half saw the Red Hands home.

Tyrone went on to beat Kerry in the All-Ireland final.

Tyrone were defending champions when the two met in Croke Park in the All-Ireland quarter finals. Ronan McGarrity and David Brady dominated the midfield for Mayo that day and even a Stephen O’Neill goal into the Hill wasn’t enough to save the Ulstermen from being dumped out of the Championship.

Mayo would lose the 2004 All-Ireland final to the Kingdom.

Mayo responded well to adversity in this game, going 1-6 to 0-6 down thanks to a Eugene McKenna goal. Indeed, McKenna’s punched effort was to by Tyrone’s last score of the day, Mayo reeling off six points on the spin to reach the All Ireland final.

Sadly, Cork proved too strong in that game, emerging 0-17 to 1-11 winners.
